Samad is an insecurely imperfect and inconsistent character that is obsessed with tradition, but unable to control his desires and actions. Although Samad is portrayed as a character to be sorry for because of his immigrant struggles, I find him deplorable and pathetic. Smith shows the struggle an immigrant faces trying to balance his culture with a new way of life. The second section of this novel focuses on Samad Iqbal as the main character. White Teeth is an enthralling novel by Zadie Smith that covers a wide variety of topics and issues.
